Baby Stepping: 10 Ways to Baby Proof your Backyard

There are few moments in life more memorable than introducing infants and toddlers to the world around them. Your backyard, with its grills, firepits, outdoor chair covers, and solar shades is the perfect place to start. However, it’s crucial that you implement safety measures throughout your yard to ensure that little ones can play, learn, and explore without risk.

        Lawn Life

Before taking on the task of baby proofing your yard, you’ll need to perform a clean sweep.

Even the smallest, most innocuous bits of nature can pose dangers to crawlers and those taking their first steps.

Clear the yard of any fallen branches, remove rocks and debris, and fill in any holes in the ground that you might come across during your clean sweep. Providing a hazard-free yard for young ones to explore will make a huge difference in their outdoor experiences.

        Plush Padding

Small strips of foam padding can be added to table corners and chair arms with sharp edges. Keeping a constant eye on a little one is a difficult task, so a bonk on the head is inevitable. Proper padding where it’s needed most ensures that no injury will come from it.

Outdoor Chair Covers & L-Shaped Sofa Covers

If there’s one thing little ones are good at it’s taking a tumble. By keeping your harder to police items covered, the danger of the fall is eliminated. Kid-friendly chairs, high chairs, and bouncers are the perfect solution for your pint-sized guests.

        Safeguard Your Garden

Your garden may be the pride and joy of your backyard, but not every plant is safe for little ones to be around. Popular plants including daffodils, hydrangeas, English ivy, and foxglove are poisonous to small children if touched or ingested.

Garden netting is the smartest option for separating little ones from potentially harmful plants. An added benefit of garden netting? It keeps critters out so you can maintain a picture perfect flower bed all summer long.

        Fantastic Fencing

Establishing boundaries is always important, especially when it comes to baby proofing your backyard. Fences and other perimeters prevent toddlers from wandering too far into dangerous spots like the driveway or neighborhood road.

If you don’t have a fenced-in yard, there are plenty of perimeters you can set up ahead of time for baby’s big day in the backyard. Temporary fencing can be found at most hardware stores and features simple installation for quick set up and take down.

        Stair Safety

If you’re the proud owner of a multi-level deck, it’s your responsibility to ensure that any steps or stairs present on your patio are sufficiently baby proofed from top to bottom.

A high quality baby gate placed at the top and bottom of the deck stairs next to your already safe l shaped sofa covers will make simple work of preventing any tumbles or falls.

        Bugs Be Gone

If you have a green thumb, there’s a fair chance you’ve used chemical pesticides in your garden to keep pesky insects away from the plants. But while pesticides may serve a practical purpose, they’re harmful to humans – especially babies and toddlers who don’t understand the dangers they present.

The easiest way to keep bugs at bay without using harmful chemicals is to make the switch to natural pesticides. You can mix up an effective bug buster using ingredients from your pantry.

Mix 1.04 oz dish soap, 8.4 oz cooking oil, and 8.4 oz water for a pesticide that’s not harmful to babies but harsh against bugs.

        Simple Storage

Maintaining a manicured lawn requires plenty of equipment not suited for a childproofed backyard. Lawnmowers, weed whackers, and the like should all be safely stored away in garages or work sheds under a tarp and far from play areas.

        Safety Structures

No matter if it’s a swing set, sandbox, or a treehouse, making sure that the play structures in your yard are up to par when it comes to safety should be a top priority. Taking the time to thoroughly inspect the play areas in your backyard will help you stay on top of safety.

A few things to keep an eye out for when inspecting play areas are threadbare ropes, cracked or rotted wood, and rusty nails that have begun to stick out. Make a quick fix of these safety concerns and the kids will be able to play in peace.

        Water World

Water features are a wonderful addition to any backyard, but can prove to be dangerous for nippers on the move. Luckily, you can keep them safe without having to drain your pond, pool, or fountain.

The easiest way to keep kids a safe distance from water is by adding temporary fencing around the feature in question. You can also set up a pool alarm that will alert you if a little one crawls too close to the edge, or keep them off limits with accessories such as hot tub covers.

        Foolproof Fire Pit

Everyone loves pulling off the outdoor chair covers and l shaped sofa covers for a summer evening around the fire pit, but we don’t always think about the safety hazards they present – especially when it comes to curious toddlers who are prone to losing their balance.

Keeping your fire pit covered at all times when not in use eliminates any worries you may have regarding child safety. And similar to measures such as sofa covers, a fire pit cover will protect your pit from harsh summer sun and children alike.
