A Healthy Halloween: 9 Secrets to Feeling Good This Halloween

Every holiday calls for an emphasis on maintaining your health, and Halloween is no exception. Between sweet treats and hearty Fall meals, it can seem difficult to keep on top of healthy habits. Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can keep things healthy while still enjoying the holiday.

        The Great Outdoors

Combine Fall leaf watching with staying active by spending plenty of time outdoors. From Fall hikes to corn mazes, there’s plenty of options available for you and your family to stay active all Autumn long.

Dedicate at least one day of the weekend to an outdoor activity for the whole family, weather permitting. You can even take a weekend camping trip filled with hiking, canoeing, and even activities such as ropes courses or rock climbing. Just remember to pull down the cellular curtains before you head out.

        Fall Fruits

Autumn is the perfect season for feasting on fresh fruit. Apples, pears, grapes, and even figs are all at their best in the Fall. Incorporating these fruits into your daily snack routine will help you get your vitamins and nutrients while getting to enjoy the most delectable flavors of the season.

        Skip Out on Heavy Meals

The cooler weather of the Halloween season often brings with it a trend of heartier meals. While everyone can appreciate some delicious comfort foods, it’s important that you consider the nutritional factors involved in such indulgences.

Make a point of limiting the hearty meals you cook for yourself and your family. Or, if you’re too big of a fan of comfort food flavors to give them up entirely, consider pulling off the dining set covers and serving up healthier versions of your favorite Fall meals. This includes dishes such as cauliflower mac & cheese, zucchini enchiladas, and mushroom stroganoff.

        Cut Out the Candy

The main culprit for when it comes to unhealthy habits this Halloween is no doubt all the crazy amounts of candy being passed around. Sugary sweets are a staple of the season, but overindulgence in said sweets isn’t in line with healthy habits.

One of the simplest ways to cut down on candy consumption is to keep the amount of candy you have in your house to a minimum. Smaller, “fun size” candies are ideal for staying on top of your sugar intake without having to give up sweets entirely, so consider keeping them around for post-dinner treats.

        Eat Before Trick or Treating

The biggest night of the Halloween season is also the sweetest. From chocolate bars to fruit candies, your family will be hauling plenty of tempting treats. In order to avoid feasting on the collected candy, prepare a healthy but filling dinner for your family before you place your table top covers and truck cover and head out on your trick or treating adventure.

Full stomachs will keep your energy up and leave just enough room for a treat at the end of the evening.

        Hand Out Healthier Options

Encouraging healthy habits can extend beyond your family. If you’re planning on handing out treats this Halloween, consider giving trick or treaters some healthier sweets and treats when they make a stop at your house.

Boxed raisins, organic chocolates, gum, and baggies of popcorn or pretzels are popular choices for those looking to spread healthy habits. And be sure to note any allergens that are in the treats, such as nuts or soy, and make a sign with allergy information.

        Be Sure to Stay Hydrated

Between Halloween parties, Fall hikes, and trick or treating, Autumn is an activity filled season. Keeping on top of your hydration habits will keep you energized, refreshed, and feeling good, and is hugely beneficial to your health in the long run.

Sit down with your family and set up individual hydration goals. Adequate water intake varies based on age, gender, and weight, so be sure to take those factors into consideration.

        Brush Up

Healthy teeth brushing habits are important every day of the year, and this is especially the case during the Halloween season. High sugar candies are notorious for causing cavities and bad breath, so making sure you and your family stay on top of proper brushing habits is crucial for your oral health.

        Remember to Have Fun

While maintaining your health is no doubt important, you don’t need to deprive yourself of treats and pleasures this Halloween season. Feel free to enjoy candies, baked goods, and sweet apple cider in moderation. Halloween is the season of fun, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t celebrate safely!
