No Place Like Home: 11 Secrets to Securing Your Home Before Vacation

When planning to lay sprawled on a beach or traversing the countryside to celebrate the pride of Summer, the last thing you want to stress about is the security of your home & valuables. As you set out to unwind, ensure foolproof security for your home, so you can come back to an untouched and safe abode.

        Remove Your Spare Key

Whether you have your spare key hidden underneath a flowerpot, above a door frame, or below a fake plastic rock, finding it would be a piece of cake for any seasoned thief. Before you pack your bags, make sure you have removed the key from noticeable places to avoid handing your home’s possessions over on a silver platter.

Put a Pause on Your Mail Deliveries

An overflowing mailbox can signal a vacant home, which could rouse unwanted attention from strangers. Ask your trusted neighbor or a friend to stop by and pick up the mail. You can even stop your mail deliveries while you are away without giving the slightest hint that your house is unoccupied.

Set a Timer for Lights & Electronics

If you have a smart device that controls the lights and electronics in your home, using an automatic timer to turn them off and on at specific times is a great and cost-effective way to increase the security of your home. Set up a few timers for lamps, lights, and TVs throughout the house, so it appears that people are around. Make sure the items switch on at different times each day so as to not appear scheduled.

        Install a Doorbell Camera

Keep your house’s security in check by installing a doorbell camera that works as a peephole, even when you are miles away from your abode. This gadget sends an alert on your phone whenever someone steps to your door, adding an extra layer of home security. Giving the impression you are still home, you can easily speak to visitors in real-time while you enjoy your vacation.

        Keep Your Lawn Mowed

Since unkempt, overgrown lawns or yards are clear signs of an empty house, hiring someone to mow it can help keep the backyard in good shape. To ensure your landscaping stays pristine and fresh, even in your absence, remember to shade your plants with custom tarps and hardscapes with chair covers, outdoor cushion and pillow covers, and sectional covers.

Leave a Car in the Driveway

Keeping your driveway busy is a great trick to ensure your home’s security while you are away. Unless you have to use your car to get to your destination, leave it in the driveway, so your house won’t scream ‘vacant’. If you are using your car, try asking your friend or neighbor to park in your driveway.

Think About Investing in Smart Lighting

Investing in smart lighting is a great way to ensure your home’s foolproof security while you are off vacationing. These smart LED bulbs, connected through a mobile app or smart device, can be easily automated remotely. Activated by nearby movement, these lights switch on when someone walks up, which proves extremely useful in deterring burglars from breaking into your home.

        Consider Your Curtains

Nothing screams vacant home more than closed blinds and curtains. It’s better to keep your curtains, blinds, and shutters in a similar position to how they usually are to trick strangers into believing you are still home, which will keep unwanted peering eyes at bay.

        Create a Decoy Security System

Looking for a smart security solution for your home without breaking the bank? Create a decoy security system. Putting up fake security signs, stickers, and imitation cameras in plain sight can serve a great deal in deterring trespassers from approaching your property.

        Disconnect the Garage Door

Since most garages have direct access to your home, disconnecting their electric doors before you set out is important. Seasoned burglars can easily hack the electronic signal and get into your home. Plus, you can also run the risk of exposing your valuable vehicle parked within. Cover the tools and valuables with chair covers to ensure their safety.

Protect Against Fire in the Home

Incidences of fire outbreaks and short circuits are common, especially when the house is left unattended. Remember to get your smoke alarms checked and make fire extinguishers easily accessible before you go vacationing. Unplug all unnecessary electrical appliances or set timers to avoid running the risk of electrical fires and property damage.
