Hang Out in Style: 5 Ways to Integrate Hanging Chairs and Hammocks Into Your Patio Design

Innovating your backyard’s outdoor seating arrangements should be at the top of your spring to-do list. With the weather getting warmer and the days getting longer, it’s a great time to think outside the box and embrace the stylings of hanging chairs and hammocks. No matter the challenges you think you might be facing, relaxation and the calming motion of your suspended place of peace is only a spring breeze away..

        Don’t You Hammock Me

Rope hammocks have the natural ability to mesh with any and all types of outdoor living areas. The versatility of a rope hammock lies in its ability to adapt with its surroundings. Whether your furniture is uncovered or your table/chair set covers and sofa and loveseat covers are on, they serve as both an accent of their own and a sturdy and reliable relaxation spot.

There are two ways to install a hammock in your backyard: either hanging it from two trees or beams, or purchasing a standalone hammock stand. Both options offer versatility to move your hammock when the fancy strikes. Keep in mind that if you are using trees or beams as anchors, you will need to ensure that the wood is sturdy enough to support the hammock with someone resting on it.

        Macramé Baby

One of the most eclectic seating options to see a recent rise in popularity are macramé hanging chairs. These rope woven chairs add an aesthetically pleasing, Bohemian flare to your outdoor lifestyle area without the hassle of a complicated setup: they can easily be attached to a pergola beam or tree branch as easy as you please.

Your new macrame swing chair deserves some proper accessories to keep it from looking bare bones though. Adding a fluffy pillow that color coordinates with your L shaped covers gives your chair an aesthetic boost and will help tie everything together.

        Egg Head of the World

        1

A simple way to give your backyard lifestyle area a visual upgrade is with unique furniture and designs. As a funky variation of macrame chairs, egg chairs with stands are the perfect choice for breathing some fresh air into your outdoor living room without having to take on a top to bottom design renovation.

When integrating unique pieces into your furniturescape, cement the egg chair’s status as a strong contender for consideration. Nesting egg chairs are simple but effective in being both a vessel for seating and a symbol of thinking outside the box when it comes to breathing life back into your backyard.

In many cases, the most unconventional choice is the one that might end up popping when presented alongside more conventional backyard seating arrangements. A simple egg chair paired with the expected outdoor dining set is an easy way to highlight both pieces without overwhelming the visual appeal of the porch, patio, or deck.

        Swinging for the Fences

        1

If you’re looking to cast some old school charm into your outdoor living area, porch swings are the way to go. While these relaxing accessories are typically found on front porches, there’s no reason you can’t get creative by adding them as a new seating embellishment in your backyard menagerie.

The key to installing a porch swing is ensuring that it is properly anchored. You cannot support a two-person porch swing without a joist (a horizontal support beam). This means either utilizing joists found in the roof of your covered patio or installing a standalone frame with its own joist.

When anchoring the swing, it’s imperative that you find the most durable area of the patio to hang the chains from; this will be important in ensuring the safety of your swing is as appealing as its visual flair.

        Replace. Replenish. Refresh.

When adding hammocks, hanging chairs, or swings to your backyard, it’s crucial that you avoid overcrowding the space. A cluttered patio is not only difficult to navigate and relax in, it creates an unappealing, messy aesthetic that bogs down the striking visual appeal you have built.

The simplest way to keep your patio’s visual appeal streamlined, while simultaneously adding new elements, is to focus on replacing instead of adding. Take note of the age and condition of each of your patio furniture pieces and accessories. If you have an outdated couch set, consider pulling off the sofa and loveseat covers or sectional covers and replacing those pieces with a hammock built for two.

That said, a great deal of diligence can be taken in differentiating the space with variety. Variety of aesthetics is a new normal in exterior decoration. If you have a piece of furniture that you can’t see yourself living without, it can actually be beneficial to integrate that piece into the new space – rather than building everything around it.

This seamless integration brings the visual appeal full circle and helps mesh the taste level. By pairing the bohemian nature of a hammock with the stoic ambiance of a stone patio furniture set, you pave the way for a backyard sensibility all your own – replicated by few and wholly unique to you.
